FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Friday, December 19, 2008

Ice Skating in Wascana Centre

Just in time for the holidays!  A public skating surface has been created near the Canada Games Wascana Lake Centre at the Marina.

The rink is located at approximately 3000 Wascana Drive in the lower Marina.  It is set adjacent to the Lake and offers a magnificent view of Wascana.

This is a free, unsupervised facility open to all residents and visitors.

A heated indoor skate change area has been provided within the Canada Games Wascana Lake Centre building.  It is open from 9:00 am – 10:00 pm daily, including holidays.  As well, there are heated washrooms on-site.

Free parking is available in the Marina parking lot, the lower Marina parking lot as well as at Wascana Place.

The Wascana Centre Authority also wishes to remind people to stay off Wascana Lake.  With the “Big Dig” came many changes including an under water aeration system.  Though beneficial to the lake overall, this system weakens and thins the ice in a number of different locations.  There will likely be no visible signs of danger on the surface but because the ice is weakening from underneath it is extremely dangerous.  Please obey the “thin ice” signs posted around the perimeter of the lake.

For more information please call 522-3661.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Wednesday, September 23, 2008

Wascana Centre Harvests Crop

Wednesday, September 24 at approximately 10:00 am, weather permitting, Wascana Centre Authority will begin its harvest of the wheat crop planted in the meridian of Wascana Parkway near Research Drive.

Equipment and crew from Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) will be on site to combine the durum.   AAFC supplied and seeded the crop this past spring as an experimental project for Wascana Centre Authority.

The crop in the boulevard was an interesting site for those travelling past and further enhanced Wascana’s ability to provide an escape to the country in the middle of the city.

Wascana Centre’s CEO Bernadette McIntyre says, “this is a fascinating piece of agriculture that can be brought into the middle of a busy street and remind us all of what is just beyond our urban borders, of what really makes Saskatchewan.”

The seed used is an experimental durum created by the scientists at the Semiarid Prairie Agricultural Research Centre in Swift Current.

This small section of crop will serve to assist with internal projects at Wascana Centre. The Wascana Centre Greenhouse has hand selected stalks of wheat to use in its Autumn floral arrangements.  Three of these displays will be presented to the Authority partners – the Province of Saskatchewan, the City of Regina, and the University of Regina.  Wascana Centre will then use the remaining grain to feed the birds housed this year in our over-wintering station.

Wascana Centre Promenade paving

Wascana Centre Authority wishes to advise that the Albert Street Promenade multi-purpose path will be temporarily closed while hard surfacing is put in.

The Promenade is located in Wascana Centre bordering the west shore of Wascana Lake.  It runs parallel with the Albert Street Bridge.

The path was a new addition to Wascana Centre in 2004 in conjunction with the Big Dig project.  The new pathway allows for a continuous loop around the lake and has been quite favourable with regular users who can now bypass the narrow and sometimes dangerous sidewalk along Albert Street.

This pavement project is being spearheaded by the Ministry of Government Services.

For more information please call Wascana Centre Authority at 522-3661 or visit our website at www.wascana.sk.ca.

First Case of Dutch Elm Disease Confirmed in Wascana Centre

A tree in Wascana Centre has been confirmed as infected by Dutch Elm Disease (DED).

This is the first case of infection in the Centre since Dutch Elm Disease was first identified in Regina in 1981.  There are some 5,000 American Elms in Wascana Centre.

The impacted Elm is in the vicinity of Legislative Landing, northwest of the Queen Elizabeth 2 Gardens.  It was identified as suspect by Wascana Centre Authority Forestry staff, and a sample was submitted to the Provincial Crop Protection Laboratory for testing.  Confirmation of the infection was received today.

Dutch Elm Disease is caused by a fungus which attaches itself to an elm bark beetle.  When the beetle bores into the bark of an elm tree, the fungus is introduced into the tree’s vascular system.  The system becomes clogged, preventing the tree from transporting essential nutrients and water to its canopy leaves.  Eventually the tree is starved for moisture and it dies.

There is no cure for the disease and infected trees must be removed and disposed of by burning or burying.

Wascana Centre’s DED preventive practices include regular monitoring of all elm trees in the Centre, pruning of dead or dying branches (except during the province-wide pruning ban between April 1 and August 31) and insecticide spraying for elm bark beetle annually.  The infected elm was sprayed in the Fall of 2007.

Once the tree is removed from the site, Wascana Centre crews will continue to monitor neighbouring trees closely for any sign of infection.

The clean up of Wascana Lake, resulting from an accidental asphalt spill in 2007 is complete.

A contractor crew which has been at work in the area of the Saskatchewan Science Centre for the past two months has begun removing equipment as a part of decommissioning the site.

During this phase of the project impacted sediment was removed from the lake bottom near the Science Centre and hauled to an accredited site for treatment and/or storage.  Water was pumped from coffer dams to expose the sediment.  After it was treated and tested, the water was returned to the Lake.

The project was governed by a Remedial Action Plan established by Stantec Consulting in consultation with environmental regulatory agencies, Wascana Centre Authority and other stakeholders.  The clean up work was done by Envirotec Services Incorporated.

The project began in the spring of 2007 when an estimated 6,000 litres of asphalt emulsion compound accidentally spilled at the McAsphalt Industries plant on Arcola Avenue and entered a storm sewer adjacent to the plant.  An unknown amount of the material entered Wascana Lake from a storm sewer outlet south of Broder Street.  The initial clean up phase was successfully conducted at that outlet during the summer and fall of 2007.

Now that the physical clean up has been completed Stantec Consulting will continue to monitor the water quality of Wascana Lake and submit results to the regulators.

Based on a review of the effectiveness of this final stage of the clean up and any additional monitoring results gathered this summer, the Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment, in consultation with Wascana Centre Authority and other environmental regulatory agencies will determine whether there is a need for further remedial activities.

Wascana Lake Off Limits During Fireworks

Wascana Centre Authority and Big Bang Fireworks are providing notice that there are to be no watercraft on Wascana Lake during the shooting of fireworks on Canada Day, July 1, 2008.

This is a decision made in conjunction with the Regina Police Service after thorough consultations and a review of the Federal regulations surrounding fireworks deployment.

Just as there is a safety perimeter in place on land where bystanders must stay a certain distance away, this too is applicable on the water.  Shrapnel from the fireworks is dangerous, thus for everyone’s safety there will be no public watercraft allowed at all on Wascana Lake.

Annual Goose Round-up

Wascana Centre Authority announced today that the annual roundup of Canada Geese in Wascana Centre will occur on Thursday, June 26, 2008.  This is an annual event to reduce the goose population in the Centre.  This year’s partners are Wascana Centre Authority, Royal Regina Golf Club, Wascana Golf and Country Club, City of Regina, Ministry of Environment and Regina Airport Authority.

Approximately 800 goslings and adult geese will be gathered beginning Monday.  They will be marshalled in a fenced area in Wascana Centre.   On Thursday, the geese will be rounded up and crated for transport to Leaf Lake, near Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan.  The round up will start at 7:00 a.m.

Typically geese return to the area where they learn to fly.  Moving the goslings before they can fly should result in fewer geese in Wascana Centre next summer.

Members of the public interested in helping with goose round-up, can contact Wascana Centre Authority Naturalist Bob Ewart at 347-1823.

Wascana Lake Unsafe

On Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008 there will be a training exercise on Wascana Lake as part of an Ice Safety Rescue Course conducted by Saskatchewan Environment.  Wascana Centre Authority would like to use this opportunity to remind everyone that the ice on the lake is unstable.

Members of the public are prohibited from being on the lake during the winter.  The ice is dangerously thin across many areas of the lake and so any excursions onto the water area are dangerous.

Open ponds of water are visible from Albert Street.  These are the most observable points of danger but the entire lake is a risk.  As part of the “Big Dig” Wascana Lake revitalization project, there were powerful under water aeration systems put in place to keep the lake and its water environment alive.  These systems are distributed throughout the lake and make the entire surface area vulnerable.  From the surface the ice may appear fine, but under the top level of snow it could be very thin.

Do not be fooled into a sense of security because of the cold weather.  No matter the temperature the ice will be unsafe because of the flow of water.  Please obey the “thin ice” signs posted around the perimeter of the lake.

There are many other options for fun, safe outdoor activities in Wascana Centre.  Try the ski trails, the skating surface near the marina or tobogganing on Wascana Hill.

Dogs becoming a problem

Wascana Centre Authority reminds the public that there is a dog bylaw in place within the boundaries of Wascana Centre.

We encourage use of the park and welcome all users.  However the debris left behind by some of our four legged users is becoming a problem.

We take great care to maintain a top-notch facility that is for the enjoyment of all to use.  With animal feces spread through the park, it is very difficult for all users to thoroughly enjoy themselves.

Wascana Centre Authority does provide bags for cleaning up after your animals and there are frequent garbage containers spread through the park for disposing of waste.

Please remember that the park is for the enjoyment of all users.  A trail of doggy doo doo is not the best vision of freedom for children’s exploration

For more information please call Wascana Centre Authority at 522-3661.
